Hello, and welcome to the “all new” Ramblings and Disorganized Drivel of Hooligan D blog. I am the hooligan, the “D” stands for Don and this is my blog.

I began this blog five years ago because I am a sucker for peer pressure (everyone else was doing it) and it seemed like it could be fun. When I began the blog it really had no direction and blindly I had no idea how or what I was doing so unless you’d enjoy some goofy poems I wouldn’t even bother with the archived posts prior to 2011.

The new direction with the blog will be along the lines of what the name suggests; ramblings and disorganized drivel. Basically it will be whatever I feel like talking about at the time. It could be a vehicle to display any new artwork I have created (did I mention that I am an artist), a talk about sports (rants about my favorite teams and their inability to keep me from having to rant about them) or maybe even a goofy poem now and then. Mostly it will probably be about my favorite subject and that is music. I have an extensive library and knowledge of music (I think that I could have done really well on that old Rock N Roll Jeopardy show that was on VH1 for a few years) that I feel like sharing with the world.

Some of the music will be well known to most while others will be very obscure and probably unheard of for the most part. It will not be album reviews because I can’t stand and usually disagree with critics anyway, but will be more of here is this group, this is their genre and a few samples so you can decide for yourself. I know that personally I have discovered some of my favorites groups by accident through a music review or just thumbing through the discount section in a music store and trying a band that just has a cool or unusual name.

Currently I am planning on this being a weekly blog, but may change that as time goes on. I do not know who, or if anyone will read my blog, but I figure, even if no one does, it will still give me a creative outlet to talk or ramble on and will, hopefully, keep me from just aimlessly staring at the same handful of websites for hours at a time.

So, with that, “Le……………….t’s get ready to Ramble!”

The Post That Wasn't?

After much thought and consideration as well as a couple days of serious soul searching I have come to the painful (probably obvious to the casual observer) conclusion that I have nothing of much interest to say. Not a very good attribute when one is trying to write and have people read it. I have been beating my head against a metaphorical wall (hurts much less than a real one) (I'm guessing) for three days now just to put something in print worth the pixels it is "virtually" printed with. Every time I think that I am on the right path and well on my way to the finish line I turn a corner and find that I have run head first (again with the metaphors) in to a dead end. I come up with what I feel is a noble subject for a post and then it takes a right turn in to what seems like a more noble or noteworthy subject for posting. After three (actually four) of these right turns I have found myself back at square one looking for a helmet to help with the headaches and reduce the concussions as I run headlong back in to that metaphorical wall. Ugh!!

The weekend began with a simple plan to write a post and rave about one of my favorite bands (Oasis) and how it can be possible that someone could not think that they are just as talented, influential, and outright awesome as I do. I actually don't think that it is possible, but I have heard rumors so I thought if I posted a couple of their better songs (so many to choose from) from an acoustic set they did it would not only satisfied the cravings of this and millions (cause that's how influential this blog is, yeah right) of other die hard Oasis fans but would also maybe reintroduce the band to anyone who may have gotten off on the wrong foot with the troubled and misunderstood genius that is Noel and Liam Gallagher. I was all set to post something like this and then (for reasons unknown) decided against it. Bam! right in to the wall! That was Friday. Surely, Saturday would go better.

Saturday did not go any better. And don't call me Shirley! (from Airplane; one of the best movies ever made) Saturday's pathetic attempt at non-boring banter was to be all about the mayhem that is the March madness college basketball tournament. Over the last two weeks I had seen the promise of a winning bracket decimated and turned inside out, but I still had three of my final four and my champion remaining just nothing in between. Well after the action on Saturday I would be down to my final two out of four, but still had my championship (North Carolina and Kansas) and champion (Kansas) intact. I probably don't have to tell you how that went on Sunday! Of course, since this is my blog and writing is what I do (or at least what I am supposed to do) I will tell you how that went. Not good at all! Carolina and Kansas both went down in flames (thought I abandoned the metaphors didn't ya?) and left me with nothing but a busted bracket and an all too familiar empty feeling inside. As a side note and a rule of thumb, if I pick a winner (whatever the sport or contest may be) bet the other way. On the bright side though, now I can just watch the final games without a horse in the race or a care (who wins) in the world. Of course, I have always been a big Kentucky fan.

Sunday morning I awoke to an epiphany. I knew what I was gonna write about. I was going to write the greatest post in the history of greatest posts and it was all made possible by dumb luck and a strange twist of fate. I still am unsure how it happened, but we had just watched a DVD and when the movie was done and the disc was ejected somehow the TV was on the public broadcasting channel (PBS, CMU Television).  Due to a remote control that was missing in action and the fact that none of us have arms long enough to reach the TV from our respected places of leisure the channel was not immediately changed and that is when I discovered that PBS has shows that could be worth watching on a Saturday night (and it wasn't even Arthur or The Magic School Bus). The show that was on was a documentary show called American Masters and I am not sure if every episode is about musical groups but this episode in particular was about The Doors. It was a very in dept and attention keeping view in to the rise and fall of Jim Morrison and The Doors. I watched it until the end and hoped maybe they would follow it up with another rockumentary. They didn't. But what they did follow the show up with was a concert. The Foo Fighters live from the Austin City Limits. I always thought that show was kept exclusive for country acts, but this was definitely the Foo Fighters. I love the Foo Fighters (as sacrilegious as it sounds just as much or more than Nirvana) and this was an awesome performance. Dave Grohl is very talented and a great showman. After the concert it was now midnight and the clock must have struck as such turning PBS back in to the stuffy, boring pumpkin that it usually is but for one shining moment and a couple of hours PBS quite possibly could have stood for Perfect Broadcasting Station. Of course, when it came to writing down my thoughts on my PBS Saturday night enjoyment nothing seem to stick and once again I was stuck.

As a last resort I thought that maybe I would just post a new piece of artwork that I have finished and call it a post. The problem that arose with this plan is that I do not have any new work to post. So I guess that I am just going to re hash an old drawing and just say that it is new to you. This is a picture that I created from still life. It is meant to show the evolution of music in my life, from vinyl records to cassettes to CD's and finally mp3 players. All that is missing is an 8 track. I call the piece "pieces of me" and I am pretty happy with the end result. As happy as I ever am with any of my artwork.

So, in closing, I want to apologize for not being better prepared to post this week and can just promise that I will try harder next week. I will try to become more funny or interesting before next week as well. Hey, if you're gonna dream; dream big right!

And now, I will leave you with some acoustic Oasis (actually Noel solo). Just on the weird chance that someone out there does not like or appreciate their genius as much as I do. A long shot I know!
